All you need to know about searching and polishing Amber
In the previous polishing amber sections we have seen how to make and polish flat faces.A flat face is better for viewing under a microscope and even with a loupe as there is no refraction of the light. It is not always possible though to have a flat face on amber as seen in the picture below. Because the amber inclusions are so near the front if I atempted a flat face it would destroy them, so I had no choice but to polish the amber with the curve intact.
Following the curve when polishing as can be seen in the next pictures may be done without the amber being kept on the surface, but some people may find it does tend to cause finger ache.
. The technique for polishing is the same as before with the only real difference being you will have to follow the outside curve. I usually find that holding the amber between the fingers longways is sufficient however I have in the past used a spring clamp, as in the pictures below to help hold the amber.
