All you need to know about searching and polishing Amber

As well as amber, you may have seen copal (or young amber as people have described it) for sale. Copal can range  from 10,000 years old to 2 milion as opposed  to amber, which can be 20 million years to 250 million years. Copal is a lot cheaper to buy and is a lot easier to clean and work than amber, as it has not had time to fully harden yet.  Again you will find insects and fauna as with the amber and if you are unsure whether searching amber is for you, then copal is a good, cheap way to start.  The best copal I have obtained has been from Madagascar.  Much of this copal was very clear and the batch I bought had a wealth of insects in it, including an abundance of ants. The only minor drawback I have found with copal is that I have been unable to achieve such a brilliant highly polished finish as I have with amber, this is probably due to the amber being much harder. On the plus side copal has a much better insect ratio per piece than amber and multiple inclusions are very common. A piece from my last batch had seven different insects including a spider, red mites, ants and four different winged insects as well as a small leaf.
